How to submit a summer study paper

New features introduced for the 2026 Summer Study

Possibility to have your paper reviewed for a scientific journal

The panel leaders and a scientific committee select the best abstracts and offer authors a possibility have the paper reviewed for publication in a scientific journal (title to be announced later). This is not an additional review, but a more strict review (double blind) that replaces the proceedings review. The paper is still part of the proceedings.

New platform – quick scopus indexing and introducing DOIs

Peer-reviewed papers accepted for publication in the eceee Summer Study proceedings are indexed in Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. In addition, each paper gets a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). Although you submit abstracts in our old system, authors of accepted papers and extended abstracts submit their papers in the new system.

Previously, indexing has been very slow. We are now using a new platform hosted by the UK company Ubiquity, specialised in academic press. This allows for very speedy indexing. In addition, all papers are available in both html format and as a pdf.

Submitting an abstract & review process

Abstracts are submitted in eceee's online submission system. In addition to choosing whether you want a peer-reviewed paper or an extended abstract, you need to add a title, an abstract text of maximum 2,000 characters (including blanks), a few keywords, and your preferred panel(s). The  abstracts are reviewed anonymously, so don't add any personal or company details in the abstract text.

Peer-reviewed paper or extended abstract?

Submitted abstracts are accepted for either of two formats.

  • Peer-reviewed papers. If accepted, submitted papers undergo an academic (single-blind) peer-review process. Peer-reviewed papers that make it through the review are published in our Scopus-indexed proceedings.
  • Extended abstracts. If accepted,  abstracts can be updated and expanded to 4,000 characters. These are thus a short description of your contribution that undergo no further peer-review (although panels will review your presentation).

The format for presentation is either as an oral presentation during the panel sessions, or as a display. The selection committee decides what form of presentation will fit your abstract best.

Abstract selection

The abstracts are reviewed blindly, and the following criteria are used for selecting winning abstracts for the Summer Study:

  • Presentation of new material (must not have been presented at another conference or published elsewhere).
  • Relevance of topic to the conference theme and its panels.
  • Likelihood of stimulating discussion and debate at the summer study.
  • Setting examples that will challenge the eceee network.
  • Clarity of thought and presentation.

The selection committee also want to make sure that there is a good mix of interesting and important topics.

Submission of accepted papers and extended abstracts

All authors receive a notification on whether their abstract was accepted or not together with further instructions. The general process for the peer review can be found on the peer review pages.

Presentations

One author can only be the main author and presenter of one paper and one display, so if you have several abstracts accepted, you have to appoint your co-authors as the main author and presenter for the rest of them, or you have to choose the one you want to present and withdraw the others.

Presenters receive further instructions and pointers for the presentation closer to the conference.

All presentations require a registered – and paying – conference participant, and each participant can only make one oral presentation and one display presentation. If the author(s) of an abstract do not register for the conference, the abstract/paper is considered withdrawn and the paper (if applicable) is not included in the conference proceedings.

Publication ethics

eceee aims to generate evidence-based knowledge and analyses of policies. Our Summer Study papers and proceedings constitute our most important source of knowledge and information. This means that it is very important that the papers for our conferences consist of original, honest work and that the studies have been conducted in an ethical manner. Our publication ethics is the reasons why have been accepted for inclusion in the Scopus citation index. Read more on our Publication ethics and malpractice statement page.

Publication of eceee proceedings online

All abstracts, papers and presentations (including extended abstracts without peer-reviewed papers) are published in eceee's online library. Peer-reviewed papers and presentations will are only available to eceee members and Summer Study participants at the time of publication, but everything will be unlocked for public access  about nine months after the submission.

Copyright and republication of papers

The copyright of the peer-reviewed papers is shared between eceee and the authors. Authors may republish their papers (e.g., add them to a project web site or research repository) as long as the following conditions are met:

  1. All co-authors (if any) agree to the publication.

  2. No peer-reviewed papers are published before the conference has ended and the proceedings have officially been published by eceee. Pre-published papers can of course be shared with colleagues and other contacts who are contributing to the paper or who might need/benefit from the information/research in them, but they cannot be publicly distributed.

  3. It is clearly stated that the paper was first published in the eceee proceedings. A full reference, and a link to the eceee proceedings library (if applicable), should be added.
